Actraiser

This was one of the first games for the great Super Nintendo. Actraiser is a very good game, very original. It's so well made that in some aspects it still competes with later SNES games. You're a god and your job is to rid the land from evil and spread life across the land. There are two modes: simulation mode and action mode. In action mode you run around as a knight, slashing away minions and fight a boss as you would in any regular platformer. You even gain a few nifty attack magic spells. In simulation mode you guide an angel to help your people develop the land and defend against monsters. Each simulation has an interesting story that slowly develops. Actraiser is one of those games you -must- play if you're a fan of SNES.
*RETRANSLATION AVAILABLE: Yes, thanks to the wonderful people over at AGTP, you can play a retranslated version of this game. Like most US-released SNES games, Actraiser's story was heavily censored and the game's challenge was toned down. In this retranslated version, everything is 100% uncut and the original true challenge is restored. You can download it below.

Adventures of Batman & Robin, The

Wow... it's just... wow. It's 100% loyal to animated Batman cartoon series. The soundtrack is awesome. The challenge is well balanced. It pushes the SNES to its limit! Aside from Yoshi's Island, I've never seen such heavy use of mode 7 special effects; it's incredible. My favorite song and favorite stage is the one with Catwoman. The way they have it really makes it seem like you're running across the rooftops of Gotham City's buildings. I love how they drew the backgrounds in all the stages. I highly recommend this game! Those of you who've seen the new Batman movie, Batman Begins, now you have a game to play that's just as good. :)

Ardy Lightfoot

This game may give the impression that it's just one of those cutesy, kiddy platformers, but it's actually a pretty good cutesy, kiddy platformer. It has great graphics and animation. The way the game is put together makes it feel like you're playing a cartoon. Ardy's moves include using his magical tail as a spring to jump higher and tossing a blue creature. He can also use his magical tail to knock out enemies when he bounces on them. Some songs are catchy, too. This is one of those games you should play when you've already played all the good games and you want to try something that's a good representation of an SNES platformer.

Axelay

AXELAYS KICKS ASS!! I'm talking, MAJOR ass. Seriously. Just look at those graphics! Look how awesome they are! Ever seen anything like that on the SNES!? It puts me in a nostalgic daze. There are two types of levels: the typical side-scrolling style and a vertical imitation 3D style, which will make you shit a brick! Before you begin each level there are 3 categories you can select various weapons from: pod, side and bay. The beginning has a limited selection of weapons, but you eventually have more choices as you progress through the game. During a level you can switch between these three different types of weapons. What I find interesting is that you don't die in one hit. Instead, you lose the weapon you were using. So since you have three weapons - it's 3 strikes you're out. The music is pretty cool too. If you're a fan of shooters then this game will likely become a favorite.

Battletoads in Battle Maniacs

This seems more like a remake of the NES title rather than a sequel. But there is some new stuff to make it more interesting. Get ready for a challenge because this game is HARD. I remember the glory days of Battletoads when the NES title came out. Its amazing graphics and fun gameplay blew everyone away. However, this SNES version didn't seem to make too much of an impact during its release. The graphics of some stages are quite impressive! That checkerboard stage looks 3D!! The snake stage looks cool with those drop shadows. For the life of me, I can't beat that tube coaster stage! -_-;

Bust-A-Move

This game is surprisingly addicting! And those Taito dragons are oh so cute! The point of Bust-A-Move is to get rid of all the bubbles on the screen, and you do that by joining together 3 or more bubbles of the same color. Some levels have special bubbles that help you get rid of bubbles faster like the fire bubble or the lightning bubble. There are two types of games you can play: puzzle mode and versus mod. In puzzle mode you just try get rid of all the bubbles before the roof falls on you. In versus mode where you "battle" against the computer or a second player. Actually, soon after I discovered this game, I discovered the Bust-A-Move arcade games, which are much better and even more irresistibly cute.

Super Castlevania 4

Super Castlevania 4 is godly. It's my second most favorite Castlevania title (Symphony of the Night being most favorite). It's so good! It was one of the handful of games that came out soon after the SNES's birth. It displayed the awesome power of the SNES's mode 7 capabilities. The soundtrack is excellent. Like any other Castlevania title, you guide a descendant of the Belmont family through Dracula's monster-infested domain. You can use the usual special weapons: knife, holy water, axe and crucifix. And out of all the 8-bit/16-bit Castlevania titles, this one is the only one that has a loose whip! You can jiggle it around in any direction. How cool is that?! Now don't tell me that ain't cool. Another thing I love about this game is the intricate detail of the stages. Even as an early SNES game, Castlevania 4 remains the one with the most stage detail. Look at the screen shots to see what I mean. This is one of those games that I keep on coming back to. I highly recommend it.

Castlevania: Dracula X (Castlevania 5)

Eh, this game's okay. I'm not really too impressed by it. It's a remake of the Dracula X that came out for the PC-Engine Super CD 2 (a.k.a. the TurboGrafx16 with the CD-ROM add-on). I've beaten both versions. This SNES version is literally a remake. It's a completely new game. At first glance it has better graphics, but further down the road it just doesn't compare. It's missing all the awesome things that made the PCE-CD version a masterpiece. I don't understand why Konami did that. I suppose I'd say the SNES version is very much watered down. From the perspective of SNES platformers, this is a good game that I do recommend. However, it's peanuts compared to the original. I have it covered in the TG16 section if you want to see screen shots from it.

Clock Tower (J) (Fan translated)

This game is actually suspenseful! It's like a gory horror movie made into an SNES game. You're one of several orphans who have been adopted by some guy who has a huge mansion. Something happens and you end up wandering around the spooky house all by yourself. You need to explore it and collect clues and various objects to progress deeper. Along the way you encounter scissor man at various points. You can't kill him; the only thing you can do is avoid him. It's scary when you encounter him! x_x I swear! This game really is that suspenseful. Suspense it not an easy thing to accomplish in an SNES game. Clock Tower was very well made to be able to induce it. You should play it in the dark with the speakers loud! I made the mistake of listening to it with earphones. See the screen shot with the bloody hands? It displays along with a loud scream. >_< It made me jump and scream like a diva being forced into a strip search at the airport. Never again will I play this game with earphones. Some parts of the mansion are haunted so expect to face more than just scissor man. Clock Tower's only drawback is the fact that it's is sooo short. You can beat it in less than 10 minutes. On the other hand, there are 6 different endings; that adds a bit more replay value. What you do and what you see is crucial to be able to get a certain ending. The walkthroughs at GameFAQs will be able to help you there. But keep in mind, USING WALKTHROUGHS SHOULD BE A LAST RESORT. THEY WILL TOTALLY RUIN THE GAME FOR YOU. By the way, check out the animations section! I made one of the infamous scissor man as he walks to slaughter you with his gigantic scissors. So yeah, Clock Tower's English patch can be found at Gideon Zhi's website. One more thing, if you've decided to play this game, don't forget to press "B" repeatedly whenever the girl's face flashes (that's "panic mode").

Contra 3: The Alien Wars

Contra games are so great! This one is particularly amazing. Not only are the graphics awesome, it takes good advantage of the SNES's mode 7 graphics. The levels and monsters are so eerie-looking yet so awesome. You gain various weapons like homing missiles, flame throwers, machine guns, and more! You also have a couple bombs that blow up everything on the screen. It's entertaining from beginning to end--non-stop alien blastin action!

Cybernator (Assault Suites Vulcan)

Cybernator is a mecha game, and an awesome one at that! The soundtrack and atmosphere makes it feel like a movie. You go on various missions to end a war against people who want the moon and what's left of Earth's oil. This game would've been cooler if you could use more than just one weapon. However, I still think Metal Warriors (the other SNES mecha game) is way better. I still recommend this game, though.
*RETRANSLATION AVAILABLE: Yes, thanks to the wonderful people over at AGTP, you can play a retranslated version of this game. It's got at least twice as much (if not more!) text to it, more characters, facial portraits for the speaking characters, and a scene that was completely deleted from the US version of the game. I wonder why they took all that good stuff out from the US release. It still -plays- the same, but it's rather deeper than Cybernator. By the way, "Assault Suites Vulcan" is the correct title translation of it.

Darius Twin

This is just another typical shooter. The graphics aren't as impressive as other SNES shooters. But despite that, it's still a pretty cool shooter and worth playing. As you can see in my screen shots, all the bosses and sub-bosses resemble fish. Yes, fish. That's just a thing of the Darius series. This game gets really fun when you upgrade your weapons to their highest level. Then you fight really big fish. Bigger fish, indeed.

Demon's Crest

Demon's Crest is, easily, my most favorite non-RPG EVER. Yes. Everything about it is awesome: graphics, animation, music, fun factor--all awesome to the extreme. You play as Capcom's famous gargoyle, Firebrand, and explore six fun-filled stages. Firebrand can gain up to four other different demon forms: stone demon, air demon, aqua demon, and super demon. There's also a 5th demon form who has the abilities of every demon, but it can only be gained by using a special password. Demon's Crest is sort of like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but not as complex. Each stage is packed full of secret items and an alternate stage. These alternate stages are equipped with their own boss at the end, so this game really has 12 Stages! Some of the special items include scrolls and bottles. Firebrand can buy spells for the scrolls and healing potions for the bottles. This game is just too cool! I highly recommend it.

This is the only Super FX game that gives you the feeling of exploration. The goal of each stage is to collect 2 or 3 keys, and as you progress through different chambers you eventually find the exit. Along the way you pick up various weapons and ammunition to blast away all that stands in your way; from red-eyed soldiers to imps to demons. It's a gory game, but the extent of its goriness has become child's play when you compare it to today's games. I *love* Doom; I especially love this version since I'm so fascinated with experiencing the best 3D graphics the SNES is capable of producing. Doom doesn't involve much thinking, so it's quite relaxing to play. Click on the Codes link if you desire the 8,464% code. ^_~

Final Fight

Ah, the Super Nintendo's first kick ass street fighting game. I think its graphics are animation are pretty good for an early game. Some of its tunes are catchy too. What makes Final Fight a really fun street fighting series is that you actually have more than just the typical punch and jump kick attack. You can also choose who you want to fight with. There are two characters: Cody and Haggar. Cody is a cool-looking tough guy who can throw people. Haggar is the big guy who can do a kick ass pile driver; he's my favorite! Some time after the release of Final Fight, they released Final Fight Guy. It's the same Final Fight, but Cody is replaced with Guy, and the game is A LOT harder. Guy is just some cool-looking fighter with neato attacks.

This third segment of Final Fight series will blow you away! The graphics and animation is top notch here. It's incredibly fun! The attacks are so cool! It's enough to give any SNES street fighting fan an orgasm. The sequences between each stage have some really cool pictures. The new characters you get to play as is a half-naked girl and a guy with hair that looks like ant antennas. Yup! A girl detective with bulging breasts, showing enough skin to make a female teenager with a low self-esteem jealous. That new guy, Dean, is really cool; he has some electricity attacks. There's also Guy, the guy who made first appearance in a special edition of Final Fight 1 called Final Fight Guy. Heh, and you also might be wondering what's up with that animation I made. To make a long story short, I improvised with the few animation frames I collected and I was too lazy to get more so I created that... interesting animation.

Gon (J)

Gon is definitely one of the most original games for the SNES. You guide a heavily animated midget t-rex to seek revenge for those who mess with Gon. No one should mess with Gon. For Gon is Gon. And getting on Gon's bad side is something you don't want to do. That's another thing, Gon gets so pissed. It's so funny to see a midget t-rex having such a hissy fit. Mess with the controls because Gon has a bunch of moves. There's no life meter so try to avoid too many hits. When his life is nearing "game over," the music starts to get wild and Gon gets pissed (you get 3 continues). There's no dialogue; the storyline is quite easy to follow since it's nothing but pictures. Btw, the desktop wallpaper is made from scans of the Gon comic. Yup! Gon is based on a comic mini-series. It can be purchased from DC Comics.

This is DEFINITELY one of the best shooters for the SNES! It's the 3rd segment of Konami's famous shooter series. Gradius 1 and 2 came out for the NES. Gradius games have quite a unique weapon system, you collect power-ups like any other shooter, but you get to choose the weapons you want. The bottom of the screen shows you all the weapons and weapon upgrades you can power up to. My favorite weapon is those little glowing things that shoot the same bullets and missiles as you do.

Gideon Zhi, the most active rom hacker/translator, blesses the classic gaming community with yet another quality translation: Gunman's Proof. It's an SNES game with Zelda 3's graphics & gameplay along with Earthbound's comedy. The theme is mainly Western but its also mixed with science fiction. You control a kid with a pistol who goes off to challenge a bunch of troublesome aliens who are wreaking havoc across the land. This game is really good!! The music ain't too shabby either. The graphics may look simplistic, but there's a lot of animation to go with them. If you love Zelda 3 and overhead platform games then Gunman's Proof is for you! You can snag the English patch from Gideon Zhi's website.

Indiana Jones
Raiders of the Lost Arc / and the Temple of Doom / The Last Crusade

This is a really cool platformer! At first glance it might seem like one of those repetitive platformers, but this game isn't the case since each stage looks completely different from the previous one. Your arsenal of weapons includes Indy's trusty whip, a hand gun and a (limited) grenade (which blasts away all the enemies on the screen). At times you need to use the whip for swinging across pits. The soundtrack is made up of remakes of the movies' songs. One of the coolest parts of this game are the screen captures from the actual Indiana Jones movies that they show in-between stages. They're the best quality real life photos I've seen on the SNES! Some stages make use of the SNES's glorious mode 7 effects. For example, when you're being chased by the boulder, sliding down the mountain on the raft, riding the rail car through the lava cave and flying through the air in a biplane. Overall, I think this is a neat game to play if you're in the mood for a platformer based on a movie or just a good SNES platformer. Its detailed graphics, soundtrack and movie shots make me so in the mood to watch the movies.
- There's a part of the game I need to tell you about because it's easy to get stuck there. It's the palace in Temple of Doom. You need to walk into the statues to enter a different room. At some points you need grab a pot to jump over a statue because walking into it from the other side takes you into another room.

King of Demons (J) (Fan Translated)

Gideon Zhi just keeps on doing it! In this game, you play the role of some guy who wants to save his daughter from a demon in Hell. He has a familiar hovering around him (like in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night). It's a fairie-like form of the soul of this guy's deceased wife. She aids you in battle and revives you if you die, but she disappears after the revive. You can regain her somewhere in the middle of each stage. Each time you beat a stage, you're given the option to change into a demon by touching a crystal. Each crystal color represents a different demon. Each demon has their own unique attack, a double-jump and can release a kick ass powerful attack when you hold down the attack button. Several parts of this game have awesome graphics! I don't like the soundtrack much though. Anyway, you can snatch the English patch from Gideon Zhi's website. To be able to find the Jap R0M at R0M sites, you need to search for "Majyuuou."
Pro-Top: In this area of the lava stage, you have two exits: the lower exit and the upper exit. What you're supposed to do is use the upper exit to snag a key so you can get past the locked door in the lower exit. If you use the lower exit then turn back, another health power-up will be there for you. Repeat to completely restore your health. ^_~ You can only do this the first time you arrive here.

Maximum Carnage is so cool! It's one of the best comic book style street fighting games for the SNES (actually, there aren't any others besides Comix Zone on Genesis :p ). And this is probably the only game for the SNES that had a real band make the music--Green Jelly! No, not real music. Just the usual MIDI-like SNES music but made to imitate the real thing. Ever heard of Green Jelly? Back in my middle school days, a neighbor once said it was his favorite band. That's the only time I heard about them. And I remembered their name because I thought it was such a weird name. Anyway, Maximum Carnage is loaded with kick ass animation and comic book style sequences. You can choose to play as Venom at some parts of the game. My favorite part is Spider Man's ability to summon super heroes. You can call upon super heroes such as Shadow Cat, Firestar, Cloak, Dagger, Ironfist, Captain America, and more! The ending of the game gets pretty tough. That infinite energy Game Genie code is so tempting to use. >_< I hate this game's sequel! It's called Separation Anxiety. It's just awful.

If you stumble upon certain hidden areas in levels, Mega Man can gain such abilities like a super dash, a higher jump, a stronger helmet for breaking blocks, and more! You need some special abilities to be able to reach other special abilities or special power-ups (a la Metroid). You might also notice that your energy starts out really low. This game kicks major ass! If you love anime with giant robots then this game is for you. The "main" robot suite that you use is the one slashing his sword in the sprite section. You can equip different suites as you progress into the game; they're just lying around stages. Some of the different robot suites fly, some have more powerful weapons or cool-looking shields, and some do strange things that make you wonder about the sanity of this game's programmers. The main robot suite is my favorite. You can aim that rifle in any direction, cast a temporary shield, has built-in jet packs for flying, and bust out a kick ass laser sword. At any time you can pop out from your robot suite and fly around as a tiny human with a jet pack. At some points you have to get out so you can open up doors blocking your path. The music has a cheesy disco beat, but it's unusually catchy. The most impressive aspect of this game are the between-battle sequences. Just look at those screen shots! I've never seen such beautiful scenes in a SNES game. This is all the work of LucasArts.

A lot of people easily turn their back on Populous 1 & 2. Either from the screen shots they think it looks dumb or from the first five minutes playing it they think it's too complicated. Dammit. >_< It's good! I swear. I urge you to give it a chance--for more than five minutes. It's really not complicated at all. The concept is very simple, your goal is to overpopulate and conquer the enemy. You'll be spending most of your time spreading out land for your followers to build on. The larger your population and structures, the more powers you can practice. Your "power meter" is the arrow towards the upper right. You can use those powers indicated on the icons once the arrow goes past it. You can do stuff like make deadly marshes and make a huge mountain in the middle of enemy territory. My favorite power is the one that turns your leader into a knight! Knights are your most effective power because they defeat enemies and destroy structures until everything is destroyed (or until their HP goes to zero =P ). The fastest way to spread out land for your followers is to raise it really high and then bring it down halfway. This also makes it easier to clear out land that is infested with deadly swamps or other stuff. The only thing I don't like about Populous is the simple fact that many of the landscapes have a somewhat childish theme. You'll see what I mean in the screen shots. Populous 2, however, improves on this.

Populous 2

Populous 2 is much better than the original. It breaks the childish barrier by sticking with the serious Greek-style atmosphere. And it has one thing that Populous 1 never had--SNES mouse support!! SNES emulators have the option to switch to your mouse when a game has mouse support. Each scenario gives you a different combo of Godly powers. Populous 2 has a whopping 30 powers! Populous 1 just had like 5 powers. You can burn away the enemy with a wall of flame or a fireball shower, you can blow the enemy away with a giant tornado, you can cause an earthquake that opens up holes to swallow anyone who goes near it, you can smother enemy-infested areas with quicksand, you can put "inverse pools" in enemy territory which turn enemies to good guys when they fall in, you can send forth a tidal wave to eat away enemy land, and much more! Oh btw, these powers can also damage your own people if any just so happen to walk by. Populous 2 also improved with the power which turns your leader into a knight by adding several more of them. You can turn your leaders into warriors, super strong like Hercules, "Helen of Troy" (charms the enemy into drowning themselves) and more! Moving around the map can be annoying, but you can also click on the thumbnail map to instantly bring you to a certain spot.

Super R-Type

R-Type is very fun! You have an invincible shield orb following you wherever you go. You can have it in front of you or in back of you. It gives you stronger/cooler weapons while it's hooked up to you. If there's a dangerous area that you don't want to take the risk of entering, then send out your invincible shield orb to do your dirty work! The R-Type series is definitely a worthy member of the classic shooter family.

SimCity

I loooooooove SimCity! This was my first Super Nintendo game! It's so good! It's so good that it can still be enjoyable to newbies if only they would give this game a chance. This is the great classic SimCity that started it all. And this was also one of the first games to come out for the Super Nintendo. The title screen still makes some devoted gaming fans piss in their pants since it brings back so many joyous 16-bit memories of the great SNES. SimCity is a city simulation game that gives you the chance to build your very own city. There are several problems you need to prevent and solve like pollution, traffic, fires, crime, and more! SimCity has lots of replay value because there's all sorts of things you can do to tackle problems and it's fun to try to get as much high land value areas as possible. Browse My Quick Guide for a quick overview of SimCity. If you feel like cheating then click on the Money Code link for the $999,999 money code. Save state hacking is another way to give yourself $999,999. My Save State Hacking Guide shows you how to do it. Not necessarily with SimCity, but what I teach there is universal knowledge. If you're a SimCity fan then you would know that SimCity's sequel is SimCity 2000, it also came out for the Super Nintendo. I purposely excluded it from RPG Lunch Break because it's terrible! There are three things about it that make it so bad: (1) it doesn't have SNES mouse support which they should've added because using the play control SUCKS (2) it's so slow, and (3) the buildings have too much detail which make them look like blobs of pixilated color in 16-bit.

Simpsons, The: Bart's Nightmare

Yet another favorite of mine. Bart's Nightmare is a bunch of mini-games in one. Join Bart as he blows up germs, destroys a city as Bart-zilla, crushes Itchy & Scratchy, jumps across pillars as Indiana Jones, flies as Bartman, and more! The graphics and animation and pretty awesome for the most part. Although, at first, the game can be frustrating because each mini-game has somewhat of a learning curve. Overall, it's a very fun game!

This game kicks ass! The graphics and animation are awesome! The stages are so unique and innovative! The enemies and bosses are drawn so well. The only drawback is that this game is too short! There's tons of stages but the fun factor makes them seem so short. It makes me feel complicated.

Ah, Space Megaforce! This shooter has an awesome weapon system! As you can see in my screens, those rotating spheres are my favorite. The graphics are okay, but they sure did make good use of mode 7 effects! One stage has a huge spaceship which constantly rotates and zooms in/out. Oh and get ready because this game is LONG; which can get annoying since everything gets somewhat repetitive.

Spanky's Quest

Spanky's Quest is about a monkey named Spanky, who bounces balls on his head that turn into various sports equipment when he pops them. Yes, you heard me. Isn't that great?! It's actually a very fun game! Really! And, no, I don't take drugs. The story behind Spanky's Quest isn't too clear but from my understanding, a witch invades Spanky's forest and builds her castle there. Spanky gets pissed and goes off to get revenge, so begins the adventure of Spanky's Quest. Each time Spanky bounces his ball from his head it grows bigger and changes color. If you pop it while it's blue then all you get is a tiny baseball. If you pop it while it's green then you get a bunch of soccer balls lined up in single file. If you pop it while it's yellow then you get a volleyball that on impact with the enemy, a couple more volleyballs circle around it for a short moment. If you pop it while it's red then you get four giant basketballs that cover a majority of the screen. Spanky's enemies are made up of various nutritious walking fruits and vegetables. You'll battle against feisty apples, angry lemons, dancing apples, short-tempered potatoes, and more!

Sonic Blastman

I think this game is pretty cool. With only 5 stages it's short, but still worth the play. Fiddle with the controls because this guy has a couple different punching attacks. His (limited) super attack is one big powerful punch that knocks out everyone on the screen.

Sonic Blastman 2

Part 2 is a definite improvement! There are two more characters to choose from! Each character has tons of awesome attacks! This time you have something like MP which is consumed when you use special attacks. You have two fighting buttons, one to execute regular punches and another to execute special attacks. There are 3 types of special attacks: (1) Just by pressing the special attack button, you execute a strong attack which takes up little attack points; you can use this button in different ways to do different types of attacks. (2) Press the "charge" button (which is "L") and then press the regular punch button to execute a powerful attack which can knock down half the enemies on the screen; this consumes a moderate amount of attack points. (3) Press the "charge" button and then press the special attack button to execute the most powerful attack a character has, which clears the whole screen; this consumes a lot of your attack points. The girl, Sonia, rules! =D Her attacks are the coolest!! There's only one thing that bothers me about this game... it's shorter than Sonic Blastman part 1! >_< There's only like 4 stages, but you do fight with more bosses than part 1.

S.O.S.

Woah, this game is cool! It's like Titanic: The Video Game. You're in a cruise ship in the late 1800's. It gets hit by a huge wave, everything turns upside down and most of the people die. Some survivors are willing to come with you while others already gave up and awaiting their death. You have about an hour to escape the sinking cruise ship. There are some people that you must rescue because you need their help to escape. The sinking ship periodically rotates to different angles; a rumble warns you of the rotate. Careful! Make sure you're in a safe spot when the ship rotates because if it rotates to a drastic 90 degree angle then the fall could be deadly. Some parts of the ship can only be reached when it's rotated at a certain angle. Three things can hurt you: high falls, falling objects, and fire. You have unlimited health, but each hit takes away 5 minutes of your precious time. When the time is close to ending, areas of the ship begin to fill with water. Oh, and drowning can kill you. The main song is pretty cool. Play this game if you're interested in something unique. I'm sure you'll need a walkthrough because finding out what to do isn't easy.

Starfox

Oh yes! Starfox was the first real 3D game for the Super Nintendo! When it came out in 1993, it amazing graphics made devote gamers piss in their pants. You play as Fox McCloud and your job is to defeat an evil that threatens the universe by voyaging across 3D worlds and space defeating hordes of evil that stand in your path. You get to choose 1 of three paths to the last stage, Venom (show in the screen shot down there). The upper path is the easiest, the upper right path is harder, and the path to the right is the hardest. Each path has their own set of stages, enemies, and bosses. The bosses are the most impressive thing in Starfox. It was so hard getting good screen shots from this game! Starfox's kick ass 3D graphics can best be experienced only when you see their movements in the game because in these screen shots, objects just look like blobs of rectangular color. My favorite level is the Space Armada! It's so cool watching all those battleships go by and then you fly right through one of them.

Starfox 2 (J) (Fan translated)

Once upon a time, someone dumped a Starfox 2 beta onto the internet. It was only 5% complete and not worth playing. Then... around Summer of 2002... someone dumped a complete version of Starfox 2 onto the internet! But... as complete as it may be - it's still a beta! There are quite a bit of bugs in it. Pushing the bugs aside, Starfox 2 is an excellent game, and quite the memorable experience if you're a Starfox fan. The gameplay has changed to something a little more on the side of war strategy. You still do battles like in Starfox 1, but now you have the option to choose who you want to fight. But choose wisely! All the enemy forces are going to attack your base if you don't act quickly and strategically. Thanks to the almighty Gideon Zhi, a complete English translation is available for Starfox 2. Check it out! Note that the game is still a little screwy and may not play perfectly on SNES emulators.

Now this is most definitely the coolest fighting game for the SNES! This is one of the handful of SNES games that came equipped with a special graphics chip to produce better graphics than what the SNES could produce on its own. For a long time this game wasn't compatible with any SNES emulator. Several years ago DeJap saved the day by making a special graphics pack to make this game compatible with SNES emulators. In early '05 ZSNES and SNES9X finally made it so that you don't have to install the graphics pack to make the game work.

Stunt Race FX

This game is so fun! Super FX games are so cool! It has 3 cars to choose and 12 fun-filled race tracks to experience. The tracks are grouped by 4's and separated into 3 levels of difficulty. The Free Trax has a 4th car you can choose; a motorcycle type of vehicle. The bonus stage involves you driving a huge truck. I'm not a fan of racing games but the cartoony atmosphere and kick ass graphics make this game so entertaining. My favorite car is the Coupe (the yellow Beetle-like car). The truck is too slow and that race car is way too fast. The Coupe is just right for my non-sexual racing needs of joyous pleasure. It's so hard controlling that truck in the bonus stage. I remember that I rented this game when it first came out. I didn't like it much - but I do now! Stunt Race FX is one of those games that are great to play when you're in the mood to play video games, but not devotingly or for a long time; when you just want "a quickie".

It's like a cartoon that came alive! The backgrounds look like pastel sketches and the animation is so smooth and sooo cool. This game is one of the most entertaining platform games I've ever played! I love the "egg system" which allows Yoshi to turn enemies into eggs when he eats them and then be able to use those eggs as weapons by throwing them in any direction. I like the TurboGrafx16-CD version of Valis 4 much better than this one (which I have covered in the TG16-CD section). Super Metroid (Metroid 3)

Oh! Super Metroid rules!! Many classic gaming fans consider this to be the best SNES game. Super Metroid takes place after Metroid 2 for Game Boy. Like any other Metroid game, you explore the underground maze of an alien planet; picking up stronger weapons and useful abilities along the way. You'll confront a mass of hostile exotic alien life forms and large bosses. Get ready to experience plenty of surprises and glorious 16-bit wonders & excitement!! Finding all the items can be tough, but no worries! GameFAQs has plenty of guides and quite detailed maps.
*JUSTIN BAILEY: Remember the Justin Bailey code for NES Metroid? It was the famous password that allowed you to play as Samus without her armor suit in Metroid, a reward normally reserved for those who can finish the game in under three hours. To the disappointment of many, there was no armorless Samus in Super Metroid. But someone took the time to hack Super Metroid to restore this feature - each sprite, and every graphic of Samus has been redrawn by hand to make armorless Samus playable once again. You can download it below. I have screen shots from this hack right here.

Tetris & Dr. Mario

Hmm well, there isn't really much to say about this game. It's... Tetris and... Dr. Mario... ya know? Everyone has played these games. They're so common. What? What's that you're saying? You haven't played any of these two games yet? Heh? You freak! Go away! You disgust me! Bah just kidding. The point of Tetris is to keep as little puzzle pieces as possible on the screen. The puzzle pieces only disappear when you put together one whole row. There are two challenging aspects of Tetris, to keep on fitting all the pieces together and to keep on doing that as the pieces drop down faster and faster. The point of Dr. Mario is to kill off the germs in the bottle. To do that, you need to combine 3 pills of the same color and/or germs of the same color. You can do that horizontally or vertically. Those little dancing germs are awesome.

Tetris Attack

Wow, this game's addicting! Seriously. Although I consider Tetris 3 the best puzzle on the SNES, overall it's not that popular. Tetris Attack definitely takes the prize as the best and most popular puzzle on the SNES. Similar to Columns on the Genesis, in Tetris Attack you combine 3 common symbols to make them disappear. The symbols follow the law of gravity and fall down accordingly. New symbols come up from the bottom. The further you progress into the stage, the faster the new symbols surface. Sometimes you run dry on new symbols; in case that you can press a button to temporarily speed up the surfacing of new symbols. If you combine more than 3 symbols you win extra points. In vs. mode, combining more than 3 symbols can sabotage the second player and throw extra symbols onto them. It's very fun! I highly recommend this game. It's especially a GREAT 2-player game.
*Oh also, as an interesting fun fact: Tetris Attack is an Americanized version of a different game! In Japan, this game was originally called "Panel De Pon" and was NOT themed to Yoshi. It was themed to cute chibi 'goddess' girls. I suppose Nintendo thought the game would make more money if it wasn't so incredibly pink and girly.

Surely, this is one of the more popular games for the SNES. This is the first turtles game to be released on the SNES (note: parts 1-3 were released for NES). The game begins generically with the turtles going after Shredder. Upon Shredder's defeat in the Technodrone, he banishes the turtles back through time, forcing them to "conquer" different eras to make it back to the present. The battles are fun, the music is snazzy, the graphics are rich.... overall, it's a great game. Adding to the gameplay are a couple special moves that can be executed on a foot soldier when its clutching itself. The coolest move throws the foot soldier right at you, maximizing to most of the screen.

Once upon a time, Nintendo held a 2-week Zelda contest live on TV. It had a bunch of people play timed games in Zelda. The winner is the person who accomplished the most in the shortest amount of time. What made this contest quite interesting is the version of Zelda 1 which these people played. It was the same Zelda 1 that we all remember, but the graphics have been remade as if it was an SNES title. Fortunately, a loyal gaming fan somehow downloaded this version of Zelda from Nintendo's satellite server. Unfortunately, it has a time limit which stops the game after 30 minutes; on top of that, the game was never completed. Fortunately, devoted rom hackers somehow completed the game and removed the annoying 30-minute time limit. Now it's fully playable! ^_^ If you're a fan of Zelda 1 then this version will give you such a glorious orgasm. Btw, someone told me that there are several ProAction Replay codes that you must use in order to be able to beat the game. I posted them in the Codes section.
